IFSW at World Urban Forum in China

Charles Mbugua
Latest News about IFSW and the World Urban Forum:
The IFSW event "Social Work Practice in Developing Cities" took place as scheduled November 4 and in his interim reporting Charles Mbugua has informed us that the seminar was very successful and went on overtime because participants did not want to leave the room. Many had not seen the connection between social work and UN Habitat issues. A detailed report and a photo will be available on our web site soon.

Original news story:
For the third time in a row, IFSW will be taking part in the World Urban Forum, brought together by UN Habitat, which will take place in Nanjing, China on 3-7 November 2008. The forum is the world’s premier conference on cities and the problems they face in a world where half of humanity is urbanized. The event is expected to bring together over 10,000 people from around the world to dialogue and to showcase the various efforts being undertaken in the fight against fast growing poverty in cities. There will be discussion about rapid urbanization, unemployment, food insecurity, disasters and climate change.

The Forum takes place at a time when the world is faced with pressing challenges posed by poverty, natural and man-made disasters and escalating prices of food and fuel, all which have important links with rapid urbanization. There is also the crisis in the world’s financial system, which is affecting how government’s and the private sector respond to these challenges.

The IFSW team will be lead by the IFSW Senior Vice President, Mr. Charles Mbugua, and will include Mr. John Ang, (IFSW President of Asia Pacific Region), Mr Xu Liugen (Vice President of the China Association of Social Workers) and delegates from Hong Kong, China, Kenya and Malaysia. Social workers from China, and in particular from Nanjing Chapter, are expected to turn up in large numbers. IFSW will present a major event titled “Social work practice in developing cities” which will showcase the involvement of social workers in disaster work following the earthquakes in Pakistan and Indonesia, floods in Malaysia and Tsunami in Aceh. Micro-economic activities in the cities of Cairo and Nairobi and social work with internally displaced persons in Kenya will also be described.

Social workers are one of the leading professional groups responding to the problems of urbanisation and the aftermath of disasters. The IFSW team will ensure that this key role is visible in the Fourth World Urban Forum 2008.
