Global peace breaks out: No one notices

UN 2005 Human Security Report claims perception of increased violence differs from reality

UNITED NATIONS
A new report says that almost all forms of political violence have declined since the end of the Cold War, but the trend has largely gone unnoticed because of perceptions driven by the media and politically motivated groups.

The 2005 Human Security Report, sponsored by several governments, says that armed conflicts, genocides, human rights violations, military coups, and international crises are all down, Voice of America reported.

Terrorism is the only category that showed an increase.

Canadian political scientist Andrew Mack, the author of the report, told a U.N.-sponsored press conference that the principal causes for the decline are the increased U.N. role in conflict prevention, the end of the Cold War, and the decline of colonialism, according to the Voice of America.

According to the report, "The wars that dominated the headlines of the 1990s were real -- and brutal -- enough. But the global media have largely ignored the 100-odd conflicts that have quietly ended since 1988. During this period, more wars stopped than started."

Among the world's news media, the New Zealand National Business Review came up with the best headline for the report: "Global peace breaks out: No one notices."
