IFSW in close cooperation with UN-HABITAT |

Monday 2 October is World Habitat Day.
The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
The theme of this year's World Habitat Day is Cities, Magnets of Hope, chosen by the United Nations in order to remind all of us that the world is witnessing the greatest migration in its history of people into towns and cities.
IFSW is represented at the World Habitat Day celebrations in Kenya by Charles Mbugua, IFSW representative to UN Habitat, whose headquarters is based in Nairobi. The events on Sunday included a tree planting and clean up in the Eastlands area of Nairobi, presentations by UN-HABITAT and IFSW at a meeting in the slums of Mathare valley. On Monday there is a global celebration at Eldoret in the Great Rift Valley area of Kenya.
IFSW is proud to work in association with UN Habitat. An IFSW team participated in the World Urban Forum in Vancouver in June. Our delegation consisted of the IFSW Senior Vice President and President for Africa, a social worker and a resident from the Kibera slum area of Nairobi and a social worker from Smoky Mountains in The Philippines. A DVD revealing the realities of life in those areas and how social workers are working with the residents was made for the presentation and will be on sale from the IFSW office shortly. We have agreed a memorandum of partnership with UN-Habitat which underpins our continuing work together.
A World Habitat Day conference 'Cities, Magnets of Hope' is taking place in Naples (Italy), on Monday 2 October 2006.
